Gardener vs. Robot
Can a robot garden? What can soil chemistry tell us? How to gardeners make sure plants have what they need?

In this workshop, students will use the scientific method to discover if robots really can care for plants and produce thriving gardens. This workshop will start with a Science Park Garden tour where students will make observations and learn about the differences in gardening methods between two raised garden bed sites – one cared for by a human gardener and one by M.I.C. robot – Science World’s resident Farm.bot. In the canopy, students will then make predictions based on their observations on which (or maybe both!) gardener has a more successful garden. After exploring and categorizing the indicators of garden success in groups, students will work in pairs to select* and conduct a suite of tests to test their hypotheses and predictions. This student-driven test selection will get them thinking about which tests will yield data or evidence that will allow them to evaluate the validity of their hypothesis. Coming back together as a group, the class will then discuss which conclusions different pairs reached and whether robots are good gardeners or not – and if so on which dimensions they are successful.
