SPEAKER BIO
Jenni Gibbons, Canadian astronaut
Jenni Gibbons was born in Calgary, Alberta. She studied at McGill University in Montreal before earning her PhD in engineering at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Prior to joining the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Dr. Gibbons served as an assistant professor in combustion at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering.
Jenni Gibbons was selected as an astronaut candidate by the CSA in July 2017, making her the youngest astronaut ever chosen by the agency. She completed the two-year Astronaut Candidate Training Program and officially earned her astronaut title in January 2020. Since then, she has actively contributed to Canada’s space program while working with NASA.
In 2023, Jenni Gibbons was assigned as the Canadian backup on the Artemis II mission, which aims to send astronauts around the Moon for the first time in over 50 years. She plays a key role in defining astronaut training and processes for future lunar missions. Notably, she is training to become a lunar capcom (capsule communicator - a member of ground support who communicates with astronauts in space via radio) to support future Artemis missions.
