Science of Puppetry: Wildlife in Motion

Step into the imaginative world of puppetry with Shizuka Kai and Randi Edmundson, two accomplished artists whose work brings storytelling to life through craft, design, and performance.

What Does Puppetry Have to Do with Science?

In this engaging session, they’ll share the creative process bringing the puppets in their upcoming show, Otosan, to life. Shizuka and Randi will share how they draw inspiration from the natural world and beyond. From gathering visual and scientific references to designing and constructing intricate puppets, they’ll unveil the many layers involved in bringing characters to life. As part of the event, there will also be a brief demonstration on how animation is created digitally, offering an exciting comparison to the tactile and collaborative nature of puppetry.

This session is perfect for anyone curious about the artistry behind puppets, the creativity that drives their design, and the ingenuity that goes into every step of the process.

About the Artists

Shizuka is a Nissei (second generation) Japanese-Canadian theatre artist with a focus on puppetry and set design, with some work in tv/film puppeteering, illustration & graphic design, directing, and jewelry making. She has worked with many theatre companies including Arts Club, Théâtre la Seizième, Carousel Theatre for Young People, Rumble, Neworld, Electric Company, Gateway, and others. Shiz is a five-time Jessie Richardson Award winner with multiple nominations, Ovation Award winner, and the recipient of the Earl Klein Memorial Scholarship and Steven B Jung Award. Among being a graduate, she also currently works as the Interim Co-Artistic Director, Production Program Coordinator, and Set Design Instructor at Studio 58.
