Staff Profile: Shellina Lakhdhir

Have you ever wondered what kind of person works at a science centre? The best kind! Meet our Major Gifts Officer and Capital Campaign Manager, Shellina Lakhdhir. Shellina has a long history of raising funds for great causes, both big and small. She brings lots of zest and determination to everything she does, whether she's talking to donors, discussing ideas to improve Science World's fundraising strategies, or talking about her two children's latest achievements.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Karachi, Pakistan and feel very lucky that my parents were able to afford sending me to a private school, where I learned English. Due to the traditional culture in which I grew up, my upbringing was very sheltered. No one ever spoke to me about going to a university or building a career.

I lived in Bahrain and United Arab Emirates with my husband and two children before immigrating to Canada in 2000 with my family. It was here, in Canada, that I received an opportunity to build a professional career and explore my potential, which led me to become independent and self-reliant.

What do you do?

I am a professional fundraiser. I have worked as a fundraiser in international development, the private school sector, and now at Science World. I have practised various forms of fundraising, ranging from organizing charity walks and golf tournaments to raising funds from individuals, corporations and foundations, among other things.

How did you end up at Science World?

Having completed the 3-year campaign I had been working on at my previous job, it was time to find something new and challenging. In this search, I explored several positions in a variety of charitable sectors but the idea of working at Science World was the most exciting and I am thrilled to be here!

What do you love most about Science World?

It's people, their passion and their pride to be part of Science World.

What has your life taught you?

Hidden behind life’s biggest challenges are life’s biggest opportunities. Be patient to become resilient.
