Speakers & Topics

Kyle Fang is a contemporary photographic artist based in Vancouver, BC. Fang became interested in photography in his elementary and high school days from lessons of film photography, darkroom, and photojournalism through the mentoring of several teachers.

Guided by the mantra that, “all things are photographable,” Fang dedicates himself to documenting the ordinary everyday life around him as his work ponders on the narratives of the social landscape, the life that permeates it, and the beauty of light and form in the mundane. He works with film and commits to the delicate, tangible process of developing his own black and white film and making silver gelatin prints in the darkroom.

In 2020, Fang self-published a photo book that explored new and unfamiliar territories after moving away from the city for the first time in 15 years. More recently, Fang put his documentary skills to work into personal travels, and participated in both group and solo exhibitions in Vancouver.

His latest ambitions include working on a personal photo project that spans the last 6 years and counting, as well as exploring his new interests in making still photography work for motion picture and television productions.

Talk: Making Something Out of Nothing

Join Science World and Kyle Fang in on this evening as he talks about the analog creative process of film photography, lessons learned from his favourite photographers, and being able to make art out of the ordinary–with images made throughout his photographic journey.
