Discover an innovative approach to teaching math as we explore the captivating world of infectious diseases. Science World and Dr. Ben Ashby from the Pacific Institute on Pathogens, Pandemics and Society (PIPPS) at Simon Fraser University, in collaboration with Genome BC Geneskool™, invite you to this cross-curricular workshop! We're keen to share educational resources and activities that reveal how math underpins disease transmission and evolution. Together, we can break down barriers to mathematics by integrating topics like algebra and probability with real-world applications for infectious diseases in the classroom. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in infectious diseases has exploded, and we're excited to demonstrate engaging activities: simulate epidemics with counters and dice, or explore pathogen evolution using playing cards. Plus, we'll happily answer any burning questions about infectious diseases and aligning with the numeracy curriculum. Don't miss this enriching opportunity to empower your teaching and inspire young minds!
All participants will also be entered for the chance to win a free guest admission to Science World (why not bring a friend to explore our BodyWorks gallery for further inspiration on a future visit?). This workshop is open to all K-12 educators in BC.
