Ice-Cream-Scoop Catch

Scoops are gadgets that help us measure and shape ice cream (and other food).

These activities are part of Science World's Big Science for Little Hands program. They were developed and tested with Preschool and Kindergarten educators.

Objectives

  • Investigate everyday machines and gadgets.

Materials

  • Ice-cream scoops

  • Pompoms, other small, lightweight balls or beanbags

Key Questions

  • What are scoops usually used for?
  • Do the scoops make a job easier for you?
  • What other uses can you think of for scoops?

What To Do

  1. Scoop up a pompom with an ice-cream scoop.
  2. Pass it to another player by rolling it from your scoop to theirs.
  3. Toss it to another player who can try to catch it.

Extensions

  • Use scoops with sand (or rice or cornmeal).
  • Use scoops to make round balls of playdough.
  • Scoop up ice cream or make melon balls for a snack.
  • Special Event:Invite a mechanic, baker or someone else who uses a variety of gadgets to visit the class to demonstrate how these things work.
