Science World has long been a hub for family fun and learning in Vancouver. Beyond its iconic architecture, it's renowned for its interactive exhibits and cross-disciplinary learning that inspire curiosity and creativity. One such space is the Tinkering Space: The WorkSafeBC Gallery, which just got even bigger thanks to a growing partnership!
Originally launched in 2017 as a part of WorkSafeBC’s “Listen to Your Gut” campaign, which teaches young workers to trust their instincts and speak up about health and safety concerns, this space entices visitors to explore the science of safety and foster a love of learning through experimentation and problem-solving. People of all ages can tinker with diverse materials, tools, and challenges, building anything from robots to fantastical structures, the Tinkering Space offers endless possibilities for exploration.
The Maker Studio: A Creative Haven
One of the Tinkering Space's highlights is the Maker Studio where sessions led by facilitators allow visitors to get hands-on and creative while learning how to use tools to test, react and problem-solve, while emphasizing the importance of safe tool operation and safety-conscious problem-solving. The addition of new, industry-standard tools like Cricut machines, sewing machines and a laser cutter will help participants learn new skills, experiment with different techniques, and take their projects home. Thanks to the expanded partnership, there are now more guided Maker Studio sessions for budding tinkerers to enjoy.
A Focus on STEAM Education
The Tinkering Space is rooted in STEAM education, which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, and Mathematics. Through hands-on activities, visitors develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills. For example, building a simple robot might involve understanding electrical circuits, using engineering principles, and incorporating artistic elements.
The Iterative Design Process - Where Failing is Encouraged
At the heart of the space lies the iterative design process. This approach encourages you to question, imagine, create, test, and repeat. By following these steps, you refine your ideas and learn from every experience. The Tinkering Space is a living laboratory where you can embrace mistakes and grow as a learner. Using tools from their everyday lives, visitors explore the science behind safety and discover the importance of choosing the right tool for the job.
“Some of the best inventions have been by accident, so we took this ethos and applied it to the Tinkering Space,” said Nicole Vieira, Tinkering Space Curator at Science World. “We encourage our visitors to explore and our team provides guidance on how to use new tools properly and safely. This exploration encourages them to expand their creative boundaries and discover the joy of creation while they develop essential skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking."
Whether you're a budding engineer, a creative artist, or simply looking for a fun and educational experience, the Tinkering Space at Science World offers something for everyone. So come on down, explore, and unleash your inner inventor!
